Who is Counselling helpful for?

Anyone can benefit from counselling. Some people may feel depressed or low much of the time and may not know why, other people may have a good idea about why they feel the way they do. Most people have experienced something in their life that they they struggle to overcome, which may lead to other problems such as panic attacks, low mood, tearfulness, anger, heavy drinking and weight loss or gain.

What is Counselling?

Counselling is an opportunity to talk about what has happened with a non-judgemental, empathic person who will keep what you say confidential. This is different than talking to a friend, as a counsellor is not as personally involved and can offer a more objective perspective. This allows the individual to consider their feelings more freely and work through them, allowing you to heal.

What to expect?

During an individual session with me there will be only myself and the client in the room. At the first meeting some basic information will be asked for such as why the client has chosen to attend, what difficulties they are experiencing and a brief history of their life.I will then give the client some information about counselling, my qualifications and experience and confidentiality. The client will then have an opportunity to ask any questions they may have about sessions, concerns, boundaries etc. After the first session clients will attend and talk about whatever it is that has brought them into counselling and any feelings, thoughts or observations that occur during the session.

Confidentiality

What is said in counselling is confidential with the exception of:

  1. If it’s clear you intend to severely harm yourself.
  2. If it’s clear you intend to harm someone else.
  3. If you pose a risk to children.

The Most Important thing...

At the assessment you get the opportunity to decide if you would like to work further with me as it is very important to find a therapist you feel comfortable with. If I’m not right for you, I hope you keep looking until you find a therapist that is.
